Piers Morgan receives flu vaccine injection from Dr. Oz, then gets sick

(NaturalNews) In a recent publicity stunt gone terribly but humorously wrong, Piers Morgan, the infamous CNN personality and British journalist whose unconstitutional views on gun control have sparked petitions for his deportation, agreed to take his first ever flu shot during a live taping of The Dr. Oz Show that aired on January 11, 2013. In front of a live studio audience, Morgan rolled up his sleeve and received the injection to help dispel the “myth” that flu shots cause the flu or are in any way dangerous.

But just a few days later, Piers reportedly began to develop flu-like symptoms that clearly inhibited his ability to speak properly. His symptoms quickly worsened, prompting him to publish a “tweet” on January 23, just 11 days after getting his flu shot, explaining that his voice had “plunged to [a] ludicrous level, fading in and out.” Following this, Morgan added, “Not entirely sure I’ll make tonight’s live show at this rate.”

So much for all that talk about the safety and effectiveness of the flu shot, and Dr. Oz’s absurd claim that flu shots cannot cause the flu. As made perfectly evident for millions of Americans to see, Morgan’s health quickly began to declined almost immediately after getting a flu shot from Dr. Oz, which is highly suspicious and greatly concerning. Morgan himself essentially affirmed just days later during an interview with country signer Dwight Yoakam that the flu shot he received was responsible for spurring his illness.

“We’re both doing the math, aren’t we,” retorted Morgan to Yoakam, who had just advised the controversial television personality to never again get a flu shot. “We both saw him put that thing in my arm, and within 10 days I’ve been struck down.”

It is difficult not to chuckle at the whole ridiculous charade. What was meant to further pull the wool over the eyes of gullible Americans literally blew up in the face of those that perpetrated it, as millions of Americans have now had their eyes opened to the fact that flu shots are dangerous and can, indeed, cause flu-like symptoms and other health damage.

And what better elitist personality to take the fall for this failed attempt at promoting worthless flu shots than Piers Morgan, whose unabashed hatred for the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is helping to fuel a resurgence of appreciation for our precious right as Americans to own weapons for our own protection. With that said, it just might be appropriate to actually thank Piers Morgan for hammering what is hopefully the last nail in the coffin of the flu vaccine scam.

The rich, creamy beverage known as egg nog is a holiday tradition in many homes. Egg nog is usually made with sugar, heavy cream, whole milk, egg yolks, spices and sometimes bourbon, brandy or rum. This delectable combination ends up being high in calories, fat, and sugar. If you are watching your weight or trying to decrease extra holiday calories, you don’t have to give up egg nog altogether. Simple substitutions lower the sugar content while still providing all the delicious flavor.

Step 1

Substitute unsweetened soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or rice milk for the amount of whole milk called for in the eggnog recipe. By using an unsweetened milk, you will be saving yourself 11 to 12 grams of sugar per cup.

Step 2

Use a sugar substitute instead of white sugar or reduce the amount of sugar by half. Sugar substitutes such as stevia extract, sucralose, and aspartame, will all add the sweetness without adding the calories of sugar. Keep in mind that not all sugar substitutes measure the same as white sugar. For example, 1 teaspoon of stevia is about equal to 1 cup of white sugar. If you don’t want to add a sugar substitute, consider using only half the amount of sugar that the eggnog recipe calls for and adding more flavor with spices and extracts. If the recipe calls for 1 cup sugar, use only a 1/2 cup sugar, but add pure vanilla extract, extra nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves.

Skip the alcohol or use less alcohol. Although most alcoholic beverages such as brandy, rum, and bourbon have no fat or protein, they still add calories but no nutrition. Alcohol is fermented from carbohydrates and in the process, yeast breaks down the sugar, turning the carbohydrates into alcohol. Once consumed, alcohol is metabolized quickly and can have a negative impact on blood sugar. Drinking alcohol can also cause you to eat more calories and crave sugary foods.

Not only obesity: Junk food causes osteoporosis

(NaturalNews) Everyone knows that foods high in fat or sugar are unhealthy in large quantities. Especially given the high rates of obesity in America, we are hearing more and more about the importance of healthy eating habits. It’s time to factor in another reason, however: a poor diet can lead to osteoporosis.

Ron Zernicke (dean of University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology) and Cy Frank (executive director of the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institution) have verified that sugar and fat intake plays a role in the development of conditions like osteoporosis through the weakening of bones, which is done in two ways. Diets high in sugar and saturated fats prevent calcium absorption, and saturated fats can form insoluble “soaps” that coat the intestines. Both of these effects on the body don’t allow the necessary quantity of calcium to keep bones strong.

Unfortunately, the problems don’t just lie with the sweets. Salt is just as much a culprit. Linda K. Massey, PhD, RD, and professor of human nutrition at Washington State University in Spokane, says that the heavy intake of salt in the typical American diet is a big reason why daily calcium requirements are so high. Sodium is a necessary part of the human diet, and 90 percent of our sodium is consumed via salt. However, table salt specifically causes calcium loss. In fact, 40 mg of calcium is lost through urine for every 2,300 mg of sodium (one tsp. of salt) consumed – and the average American takes in at least 4,000 mg daily.

Soda is an obvious source of sugar, but another osteoporosis-related problem comes from soda: caffeine. Massey says that 100 mg of caffeine is a loss of six milligrams of calcium. Coffee and soda are the prime sources of caffeine in the American diet, though tea is also caffeinated. Studies have shown, though, that tea does not harm, and it is suggested that tea can actually promote bone density in older women.

Zernicke and Frank have noted that osteoporosis due to poor diet will begin to affect baby boomers in large numbers if this lack-of-nutrition trend continues. Frank notes that one in three women will break a hip by age 85 from osteoporosis. More frightening still, he adds, is that about 20 percent of these women will die within a year of the injury.

Currently, about 12 million Americans have been diagnosed with osteoporosis at age 50, which is almost four percent of the country’s population. With the mass of Christmas cookies and heavy dinners we all encountered over the holidays, these findings give us some food for thought.

Doctors may soon face requests to provide medical clearance for commercial space travelers and these decisions could impact the growth of the private space industry, according to a new analysis.

This article, published in the Christmas 2012 issue of the British Medical Journal, reviewed industry reports and medical studies to help guide physicians who may have to answer questions and fill out fitness to fly certificates for the growing ranks of aspiring space travelers.

“Commercial investment is bringing space tourism closer to reality,” said study lead author Dr. S. Marlene Grenon, a cardiovascular surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. “Suborbital flight opportunities are currently being planned by companies such as Virgin Galactic, Armadillo Aerospace, and XCOR.”

A July 2012 Federal Aviation Administration report estimates the market demand for reusable suborbital vehicles could grow to a total of 13,134 seats over a decade and bring in over $1.6 billion.

“With more opportunities for space tourism, an increasing number of less healthy individuals can be expected to fly,” Grenon said, adding that the exact nature of the effects of spaceflight on medical conditions are yet to be determined.

“Dr. Grenon and colleagues have emphasized the difficulties in commenting upon the fitness — or lack thereof — of potential candidates for spaceflight,” said Dr. Andrew W. Kirkpatrick, a military trauma surgeon and professor of critical care medicine at the University of Calgary and Foothills Medical Center in Alberta.

Passengers should be informed of the lack of advanced medical and surgical care capabilities in current commercial spaceflight platforms, said Kirkpatrick, who was not involved with this study.

Just how far can the medical envelope be pushed- Consider that Stephen W. Hawking — the ventilator-dependent, wheelchair-bound British physicist with longstanding motor neuron disease — is slated to fly onboard a Virgin Galactic suborbital flight.

Space medicine experts say that suborbital flights are less risky than orbital missions because suborbital passengers experience about one to five minutes of microgravity.

“Most people with well controlled medical conditions are capable of withstanding the acceleration forces involved with the launch and landing of commercial spaceflight vehicles,” Grenon said.

The FAA has not made any specific statements on medical requirements for commercial space passengers, the BMJ authors noted. Instead, the FAA has opted to leave the medical screening process up to the commercial space vehicle operators. ”Experience in aviation medicine has shown that over-regulation could inhibit development of the sector,” Grenon said, adding that a delicate balance — between prioritizing passenger safety and avoiding overly strict medical criteria that could decrease the market — is needed to make the commercial spaceflight industry viable.

“If a potential space traveler asks his or her physician for a medical letter of clearance for space travel, the physician will share responsibility for determination of suitability with the commercial space operator,” she said.

While the International Space Station is currently the only orbiting space tourist destination, other extended stay commercial spaceflight opportunities could exist in the future, the authors wrote.

“It may be possible to fly to an orbiting Bigelow Aerospace hotel or laboratory in the future,” Grenon said.  “Mining companies may send employees to the Moon or near-Earth asteroids to mine planetary resources.”

Once a passenger has disembarked from their space vehicle, there are much greater uncertainties that complicate medical decision making, Kirkpatrick said.

“Adverse physiological changes that increase susceptibility to critical injury or illness may be established within hours of leaving Earth’s gravity,” he said.  “Chronic medical conditions may be exacerbated and unexpected acute emergencies may be more serious than on Earth.”

As extended stay commercial spaceflight opportunities develop, doctors will likely adjust the medical standards governing who can live and work in space.  Disabled individuals could adapt and perform as well as their able-bodied counterparts in space, said one former physician-astronaut.

“People with disabilities will be able to fly in space just fine,” said Dr. Dan T. Barry, a retired NASA astronaut and physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, who was not involved with this study.  “Many mobility impairments will be gone in the space environment.”

Manhattan gun ban instantly transforms law-abiding citizens into criminals

(NaturalNews) In the days before President Obama rolled out 23 executive actions aimed at curbing Second Amendment rights – some of which have transformed doctors and healthcare providers into gun snitches – New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo beat him to the punch by signing into law the most restrictive gun control legislation in the country.

Citing the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting as his impetus, Cuomo made good on a promise spelled out during an emotional State of the State address earlier, in which he vowed to pass new restrictions on military look-alike rifles, semi-auto magazines and persons who are suspected of being mentally ill.

“You can overpower the extremists with intelligence and common sense,” Cuomo bragged upon signing the new legislation Jan. 15, oblivious, of course, to his own extremism.

The problem; however, is that the legislation immediately transforms law-abiding New Yorkers into criminals because provisions of the law are retroactive; in other words, what Cuomo has signed is an ex post facto law, a measure that criminalizes someone for something that was legal when they did it. (For the record, ex post facto laws are prohibited by the U.S. Constitution, under Article 1, Sect. 9 and Article 1, Sect.10, the latter section of which applies specifically to states.)

So why pass such legislation at all- The answer is arrogance. Politicians like Cuomo, a Democrat in a state dominated by his party for decades, aren’t bothered by what is legal and proper because they believe they are above reproach. Further, they know that the political and legal mechanisms put in place to hold people like him accountable won’t be utilized because they are staffed by like-minded individuals.

Push it through – Read it later

Nevertheless, not all New York lawmakers took part in this massive usurpation of power.

“I simply cannot support a bill that turns law abiding citizens into criminals by creating an entire new category of illegal firearms out of currently legal rifles and shotguns,” state Sen. Greg Ball, a Republican, said in a statement the evening the Assembly passed the restrictive new bill.

“We needed solid provisions to keep the violently, mentally ill from harming our communities, our kids and our families. That didn’t happen tonight,” he said. “While much in this bill, as far as stiffer penalties for real criminals and help on the mental health front is good, the last minute push, in the middle of the night without critical public input from sportsmen and taxpayers was outrageous and forced members to vote on a bill they had not read.”

“…Bill they had not read.” Does that sound familiar-

“We haven’t saved any lives tonight, except one: the political life of a governor who wants to be president,” Ball later said on the Senate floor. He went on to say that most members of the chamber were willing to turn law-abiding residents into criminals “hoping on the front pages that we will be seen as preventing tragedies.”

“Good night, I voted no and I only wish I could have done it twice,” he concluded.

‘It strains credibility’

Sen. John Bonacic, another Republican, echoed Ball’s sentiments, saying that despite the tough new restrictions on guns and ammunition, insane criminal acts involving firearms would not end.

“I sincerely hope this law does stop another massacre, but I honestly believe it is nothing more than window dressing designed to make people feel secure until the next tragedy strikes – all while criminalizing the actions of otherwise law abiding citizens,” he said in a statement.

Bonacic was especially perplexed by a provision in the law forbidding gun owners from possessing more than seven rounds in a 10-round magazine, “something irrelevant to a criminal.”

“Under the legislation, magazines people now own, which are capable of holding ten rounds (bullets) continue to be legal, but a person may only load seven rounds in them,” he said. “It strains credibility to believe a criminal bent on a massacre is going to load only seven bullets in a ten round magazine. Law abiding citizens, on the other hand, who erroneously load too many bullets in a magazine, would be criminals under the legislation.”

Other parts of the law requires mental health professionals and therapists to report to state authorities perceived threats of gun violence by “mental health” patients, who could then have their guns confiscated – similar to provisions being pushed by Obama on a federal level.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency signals cognitive decline and dementia risk in elderly

(NaturalNews) Loss of cognition and the ability to form new memories affects the daily lives of an ever increasing number of aging adults. Often, this decline is the first sign of dementia and can lead to more serious illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease. A study group from Tufts University in Medford, MA has published their findings in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society that shows how being mildly vitamin B-12 deficient could be an indication that some older adults are at a greater risk for accelerated cognitive decline. Many aging adults receive minimal amounts of vitamin B-12 from their diet, and have limited ability to metabolize what they do consume. Eating highly processed foods over the course of a lifetime leads to extreme vitamin B-12 deficiency that affects chemical and electrical signaling in the brain.

To set up their study, researchers analyzed data from 549 men and women enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study with an average age of 75. Blood samples were drawn and the participants were divided into five groups based on their vitamin B-12 levels. The team administered the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a short list of questions often used to screen for dementia (five tests given over a period of eight years), to each group member to assess general cognitive status.

The researchers found that participants in the lowest two groups experienced significantly accelerated cognitive decline. The lead study author, Dr. Martha Morris noted “Rapid neuropsychiatric decline is a well-known consequence of severe vitamin B-12 deficiency, but our findings suggest that adverse cognitive effects of low vitamin B-12 status may affect a much larger proportion of seniors than previously thought.” The team found that scores dropped an average of .24 points per year on average, but those in the lowest two-fifths dropped by .35 points each year, a significant decline that is associated with a decline in memory and normal thought processes.

Dr. Morris concluded “While we emphasize our study does not show causation, our associations raise the concern that some cognitive decline may be the result of inadequate vitamin B-12 in older adults, for whom maintaining normal blood levels can be a challenge.” As absorption from food can be an issue for many aging adults, it is best to supplement with the bioactive type of vitamin B-12 known as methylcobalamin, taken in a sublingual form (one to five mg per day) to preserve memory and cognitive function.

    Anti-vaccination organization ordered to switch its name or be shut down by Australian government

    (NaturalNews) Australia may be a democracy but in the case of the Australian Vaccination Network, the government is acting more like Communist China.

    A government entity, the New South Wales Department of Fair Trading, is requiring the AVN to change its name after 16 years over what sounds like the most dubious of reasons: concerns from “within the community,” according to a blog site LivingWisdom.com.

    According to the site, the AVN is a community-based information and support group that advocates for the right of people “to make free and informed health choices” – namely, whether or not they choose to receive vaccines.

    The AVN’s rules and code of ethics “restrict them from taking an anti-vaccination position,” the website said, “they are opposed to any form of compulsory vaccination or medication.”

    The website said two groups appeared to be behind the effort to force the AVN to change its name.

    So much for the ‘community’ objecting

    One is called Stop the AVN (SAVN), “a hate group whose sole reason for existence is to force the AVN to close in any way they can,” said LivingWisdom.com, whose tactics have “included harassment, death threats, posting of violent pornography, hacking the AVN’s website and a flood of vexatious complaints” to local and federal government agencies – complaints that have led to “investigations which may have cost the Australian taxpayers millions of dollars.”

    The second group is the Australian Medical Association (AMA), an industry lobbying organization that represents about half of all Australian physicians (who obviously have a stake in administering vaccines). “The collective prestige of the medical profession obviously suffers each time vaccination is called into question,” said the website.

    From all indications it sounds like the “community” doesn’t have as much of a problem with the AVN as do the two groups opposed to it. Nevertheless, the groups successfully convinced a government minister to not only order AVN to change its name – “the first time this had been done for these reasons, according to preliminary searches,” the website said – but to also introduce, and have passed in record time, legislation aimed at making it easier to do so in the future.

    This isn’t the first time the AVN has had trouble with a government agency.

    In 2009, a member of the SAVN lodged complaints against the AVN and its president, Meryl Dorey, with Australia’s Health Care Complaints Commission, another New South Wales governmental body, claiming their information did not support vaccination and, therefore, should not be allowed to carry on.

    The complaint sought a gag order against Dorey and AVN, which would have prevented them from speaking about any health-related issue.

    Making immunization freedom permanently illegal-

    A three-year legal battle ensued, with the AVN being cited by the HCCC as “dangerous, deceptive and misleading,” a ruling that cost the organization its charity authority and ability to raise funds.

    “A decision by the NSW Supreme Court in April 2012 overturned the HCCC’s warning, reinstated the AVN as a charity and informed the HCCC that the complaints which it had spent a year investigating were not valid complaints in the first place,” the website noted.

    At the request of the HCCC, the site said, the Australian government is now in the process of changing the law so that anyone or any organization can complain about anyone who talks about health, unless you’re a doctor, who would be exempted.

    “Bear in mind that the HCCC was formed to act as a ‘policeman’ for rogue doctors but has, over recent years, been effectively coopted into a police force for the doctors and government-approved medicine,” said LivingWisdom.com.

    Obama secretly signs warrantless phone surveillance law

    (NaturalNews) Without fanfare, President Obama has reauthorized a law that allows the U.S. government to conduct surveillance on overseas activities of suspected spies and terrorists.

    The law, which has been around since the 1970s and is known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, was set to expire at the end of 2012, but Obama and Congress have extended it for an additional five years.

    Provisions of the law allow the government to conduct all manners of surveillance, tracking overseas phone calls, email and other forms of electronic communication without first obtaining a court order for each case.

    Overseas targets, sure, but what if they are Americans-

    Ostensibly the law does not apply to Americans targeted for surveillance; in that case, the government is supposed to get a warrant from a special 11-judge court of U.S. district judges appointed by the Supreme Court (those this panel tends to rubber-stamp all such requests).

    However, officials at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, or EPIC, say the measure is “a controversial law that allows surveillance of the phone and email communications of U.S. citizens without a warrant.”

    “The FISA Amendments Act of 2008, as adopted, clarified the legal basis for the use of electronic surveillance techniques by the Executive, but it also authorized surveillance of foreign communications, including communication of U.S. persons, on a mass scale without adequate public oversight,” EPIC’s executive director, Marc Rotenberg, said in testimony before House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security in May.

    He said sections of the law give “the government unprecedented authority to conduct electronic surveillance without first establishing probable cause to believe that a particular target was a foreign power or an agent of a foreign power,” adding that the court’s role in overseeing any surveillance measures “is merely to review the proposed procedures and guidelines, not to review the government’s actual surveillance practices.”

    “This procedure, which has the effect of a ‘rubber stamp,’ diminishes the independent role of the judiciary and leaves the executive with broad and minimally accountable collection authority,” said Rotenberg.

    “Congress should not reauthorize the FISA Amendments Act until adequate oversight procedures are in place.”

    Well, so much for that

    Apparently, his words fell on deaf ears, though not all lawmakers were tone deaf to his concerns.

    The Senate majority rejected arguments from an unusual combination of Democratic liberals and ideological Republican conservatives, who sought to amend the bill to require the government to reveal statistics showing whether any Americans were swept up in the foreign intercepts. The attempt lost, with 52 votes against and 43 in favor.

    The point that sticks out like the proverbial 800-pound gorilla in the room is that a majority of United States senators, who took an oath to support, defend and uphold the Constitution, did not care to know if any Americans “were swept up in the foreign intercepts.”

    Voters should want to know why, considering that one issue was of primary concern to a privacy group whose executive direct spoke to that point specifically.

    (NaturalNews) Are lawmakers and the governor’s office conspiring to introduce and pass brand-new legislation that would necessarily criminalize all firearms in the state by the end of this week-

    Perhaps, according to a blog post at TheTruthAboutGuns.com website, though no one knows for sure at this point.

    In a press release, the Illinois State Rifle Association, a pro-Second Amendment advocacy group, said it has “learned from a credible source that Illinois Senate President John Cullerton will introduce a so called ‘assault weapons’ ban on Wednesday when the legislature returns for its ‘lame duck’ session.”

    The press release went onto say:

    Cullerton hopes to ramrod the bill through and get it to Governor Quinn for signature by Friday. If he is successful at doing so, nearly every gun you currently own will be banned and will be subject to confiscation by the Illinois State Police. Based on what we know about Cullerton’s bill, firearms that would be banned include all semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Pump action shotguns would be banned as well. This would be a very comprehensive ban that would include not only so-called “assault weapons” but also such classics as M1 Garands and 1911-based pistols. There would be no exemptions and no grandfathering. You would have a very short window to turn in your guns to the State Police to avoid prosecution.

    Uncertainty surrounding the issue

    A spokeswoman at ISRA who asked not to be identified told Natural News that the organization was still in the process of verifying the report, but that, as of Wednesday evening, officials had not yet confirmed it.

    A message was left at Cullerton’s Senate office in Springfield, but no calls were returned by press time.

    An investigation into the report by Natural News sheds further light on the story. According to this press release posted on the website of the Illinois General Assembly, Cullerton introduced Senate Bill (SB) 681 in February 2011, a measure that amended the state’s Firearm Owners Identification Card Act to permit “an Illinois resident to purchase ammunition from a person within or outside of Illinois if shipment is by United States mail or by a private express carrier authorized by federal law to ship ammunition,” according to a legislative summary.

    The bill required “that a resident purchasing ammunition within or outside the State of Illinois must provide the seller with a copy of his or her valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card and either his or her Illinois driver’s license or Illinois State Identification Card prior to the shipment of the ammunition.”

    The measure passed both houses of the General Assembly May 9, 2012, and was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on June 9 for his signature, which he did not give.

    Ill. Governor recommended banning assault weapons

    Instead, the governor issued what is known as an amendatory veto, effectively rejecting the measure but informing lawmakers he would sign it if it contained additional provisions he recommended.

    In issuing his amendatory veto July 31, the governor would agree to sign the measure only if it contained a complete assault weapons ban, among other provisions. Here is a summary of his amendatory veto:

    Proposes replacing the current provisions of the bill with amendments to the Criminal Code of 1961. Provides that 90 days after the effective date of this amendatory Act, it is unlawful for any person within this State to knowingly manufacture, deliver, sell, purchase, or possess or cause to be manufactured, delivered, sold, purchased, or possessed a semi-automatic assault weapon, an assault weapon attachment, any .50 caliber rifle, or .50 caliber cartridge. Provides that beginning 90 days after the effective date of this amendatory Act, it is unlawful for any person within this State to knowingly manufacture, deliver, sell, purchase, or possess or cause to be manufactured, delivered, sold, purchased, or possessed a large capacity ammunition feeding device.

    “As Governor, it is my foremost duty to protect the citizens of Illinois, especially our children, from deadly violence,” Quinn wrote in a letter to the General Assembly.

    “I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution- the right to bear arms,” he said. “However, the proliferation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines undermines public safety and the right of personal security of every citizen.”

    “Banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines will make Illinois a safer place to live,” Quinn wrote.

    According to the Illinois General Assembly’s legislative calendar on SB 681, only the provisions that Cullerton introduced eventually passed and became law Dec. 6 because both chambers went onto override Quinn’s veto within the past month.

Published in the journal Human Reproduction, their findings reveal a strong connection between children born via ART and higher than normal rates of asthma, wheezing, and the use of anti-asthmatic drugs.

    Claire Carson and her colleagues compiled data specifically on single-birth children, meaning they were not born as twins or triplets, between the ages of five and seven. Among the five-year-old group, 100 were born as a result of ART, which was confirmed through surveys with the children’s parents that took into account other factors that may have affected asthma rates, including premature birth, family history of smoking, body mass index (BMI), socioeconomic status, and the presence of pets at home.

    After adjusting for these external factors, the research team determined that children born as a result of ART are between two and four times more likely than their peers to develop an asthmatic condition. And while these findings do not definitively establish a cause and effect relationship between ART and asthma, they do raise some interesting questions about how artificial birth affects a child later in life.

    “15 percent of the children in our study had asthma at the age of five,” explained Carson. “Although this figure was higher, 24 percent, in the IVF children, it isn’t much higher than the one in five risk for all children in the U.K.,” she added, contrasting the relative risk of ART children developing asthma with the absolute, overall risk among all children.

    Even so, Carson admits that her study’s findings build upon a growing body of evidence that shows IVF and other forms of ART may be linked to high rates of asthma. A 2011 study published in the Swedish journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, for instance, also found that children born through IVF are at an increased risk of developing asthma, as well as other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cerebral palsy.

    The results “suggest that low dose omega-3 fatty acid intake,” along with cutting back on omega-6 fatty acids, “may be effective in the management” of high blood pressure, the summary said.

    Several studies continue to show the benefits of omega-3

    For years, studies have either suggested or confirmed that omega-3 fatty acids, most commonly found in fish, nuts and seeds, can lower blood pressure levels or help prevent them from rising.

    “A large percentage of people between ages 20 and 60 have a rise in blood pressure, and by middle age many have high blood pressure,” said Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, professor emeritus of preventive medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, in discussing the results of his 2007 study with Reuters.

    “We’re looking at dietary factors that may help prevent that rise, and omega-3 fatty acids are a small, but important piece of the action,” he said.

    That study examined diet and its relationship to blood pressure in 4,680 men and women ages 40-59, who lived in Japan, China, Britain and the U.S.

    After participants provided researchers with details about their diets and alcohol consumption, they gave urine samples and had their BP measured twice at each of four study visits. The research team then adjusted for 17 variables that are known to influence blood pressure such as age, gender, weight, exercise and salt intake.

    The results, which were published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, found that people who ate diets loaded with omega-3 fatty acids had slightly lower blood pressure on average than those who ate less omega-3.

    “With blood pressure, every millimeter counts. The effect of each nutrient is apparently small but independent, so together they can add up to a substantial impact on blood pressure,” Dr. Hirotsugu Ueshima of Shiga University of Medical Science in Otsu, Japan, said in a statement.

    “If you can reduce blood pressure a few millimeters from eating less salt, losing a few pounds, avoiding heavy drinking, eating more vegetables, whole grains and fruits (for their fiber, minerals, vegetable protein and other nutrients) and getting more omega-3 fatty acids, then you’ve made a big difference,” Ueshima said.

    More to it than just blood pressure reduction

    Research and studies conducted by the University of Maryland Medical Center went even further. Noting that omega-3 is “an essential fatty acid,” the ingredient reduces “inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis,” the university said.

    “It is important to have the proper ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. The typical American diet tends to contain 14-25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, which many nutritionally oriented physicians consider to be way too high on the omega-6 side,” said the university, on its website.

    “Our work is the first to look at romantic caregiving and parenting styles at the same time,” lead author Abigail Millings said.

    In the new study, researchers sought to determine whether there is a relationship between families in the way a person cares for their partner and the way they care for their children.

    “We wanted to see how romantic relationships between parents might be associated with what kind of parents they are,” Millings said.

    The researchers evaluated 125 couples with children between the ages of seven and eight for their parenting styles, attachment to each other, and their caregiving responsiveness, which Millings defined as “capacity to be ‘tuned in’ to what the other person needs.”

    “In romantic relationships and in parenting, this might mean noticing when the other person has had a bad day, knowing how to cheer them up, and whether they even want cheering up,” she said.

    “[It’s not] just about picking you up when you’re down, it’s also about being able to respond appropriately to the good stuff in life.”

    A shared skill set

    The researchers found that for both fathers and mothers, a shared set of skills applies to both parenting and to romantic relationships.

    “If you can do responsive caregiving, it seems that you can do it across different relationships,” Millings said.

    The way that person cared for their partners; however, had no effect on that partner’s parenting behavior.

    Millings noted that all the researchers found was a correlation between certain relationship traits, but that they do not know if having relationship skills actually causes someone to be a better parent.

    “It might be the case that practicing being sensitive and responsive – for example, by really listening and by really thinking about the other person’s perspective – to our partners will also help us to improve these skills with our kids,” she said. “But we need to do more research to see whether the association can actually be used in this way.”

    Noting that even people without partners can have good relationships with their children, Millings said that the research team now plans to investigate the relationship between parenting and caregiving in other types of family structure.

    They also plan to research whether strengthening caregiving responsiveness in one relationship will lead to improvements in other types of family relationships. If that is the case, they said, it could be possible to design self-help programs for relationship improvement.

    Continue the workout into Christmas Day! Volunteer to pass presents around during the holiday swap. As you’re passing holiday cheer throughout the room, sneak a quick workout in to tone quads and hamstrings.

    a. Start with feet directly underneath you, legs slightly bent.

    b. Jump up and land in a squat position, dropping glutes low and back, keeping knees open. Try not to let them buckle inward.

    c. Jump back into starting position standing up with legs underneath you.

    The realm results in just four days; no use to maintain flossing

    (NaturalNews) The world will come to an end in just four days, and that’s a huge relief because it means we can all finally stop flossing. I doubt your dental health is going to dramatically change before 12/21/12. You can also stop taking out the trash and paying all your bills.

    Over the next four days, we can pig out like obese, flatulent kings, paying no heed to the mountains of junk food, pies and donuts we consume, since obesity won’t really matter after the Mayan calendar comes to an end on December 21st and the universe implodes.

    We can stop returning rented DVDs… Tell people what we really think, right to their face… Ask out that pretty girl (or cute guy) you’ve always admired on the off chance that they might have liked you too. What’s to be afraid of- We’re all dead in four days anyway.

    Or, you could use the time to ask for forgiveness. Earn a little heavenly karma by engaging in random acts of kindness. Work to make amends in the few days you have remaining.

    The choice is up to you. There are only four days left: What will you make of them-

    In truth, your physical life on this planet is quite limited. It may not be four days, since the Mayan calendar prophecy is a wild misinterpretation, but it might be four thousand days (about eleven years). It’s certainly not forty thousand days, as that’s over a hundred years.

    So the real question becomes this: You have X number of days remaining in your life. What will you make of them-

    Whether X is 4 days or 4,000 days isn’t really relevant. Your physical life experience is limited in duration, and that means you have a limited amount of time to fulfill your purpose for being here.

    What is that purpose- I believe it is to experience personal growth and learn how to love. This is what most of the NDE survivors (Near Death Experience) report when they return to Earthly life. In the moments after this life, they are judged on their spiritual growth, the ethics of their actions, and whether they learned how to love.

    Your clock is ticking, even if it’s not the Mayan calendar driving it. Each day that passes is one less day you have available to practice love, forgiveness, compassion, ethics and morality.

    The universe isn’t coming to an end on December 21st, but your physical experience is coming to an end before you know it. When that day comes, and you face judgment for the totality of your life’s actions, how will your life appear in the eyes of the universal Creator-

    That’s the question worth considering this coming Friday, the so-called “Mayan prophecy” day.

    And when the world doesn’t end on Friday, you may wish to interpret that as all of us having a second chance to do better. How will you use the rest of your life to do better-

    Dementia risk associated with feelings of loneliness, not loss of social ties

    (NaturalNews) Studies have linked factors such as living alone or a lack of social connections to an increased risk of dementia. But according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, it is actually feelings of loneliness, rather than any of these objective external factors, that are associated with greater risk.

    “These results suggest that feelings of loneliness independently contribute to the risk of dementia in later life,” the researchers wrote.

    Well-established risk factors for dementia include advanced age, depression, impaired cognition, and certain genetic profiles and underlying medical conditions, the researchers noted. But few studies have been conducted to carefully examine the effects of social isolation. Yet with both the aging population and the number of people living alone increasing they said, understanding the relationship between dementia and isolation may be of great importance.

    Measuring “social isolation”

    The researchers tracked more than 2,000 participants in the Amsterdam Study of the Elderly (AMSTEL) for three years. All participants were living independently and had no signs of dementia at the study’s start. The researchers noted whether participants lived alone, whether they had social support, whether they had a partner or spouse, and whether they felt lonely. They found that 75 percent of participants said they had no social support, 46 percent lived alone, just under 50 percent were single and just under 20 percent felt lonely.

    Three years later, participants were asked about their physical health, their ability to perform daily tasks, and whether they felt lonely. They also completed tests to assess their mental health and well-being, and to evaluate them for symptoms of dementia.

    Upon first analysis, the researchers found no difference in dementia risk between those who were single and those who were married. But living alone, a lack of social support, and feelings of loneliness were all correlated with a higher risk.

    After examining the different variables for potential interference with each other, the researchers concluded that people who lived alone were 70 to 80 percent more likely to develop dementia than people who lived with others. The same increase in risk was seen in people who were single when compared with those who were married or partnered. People who reported feelings of loneliness were an astonishing 150 percent more likely to develop dementia than people who did not report loneliness. These effects were seen equally in men and in women.

    But when the researchers adjusted for potential confounding factors, such as age, suddenly none of the objective measures of social isolation (living alone, partnered status or lack of social support) made any contribution to dementia risk.

    In contrast, people who felt lonely were still 64 percent more likely to develop dementia than people who did not.

    “Interestingly, the fact that ‘feeling lonely’ rather than ‘being alone’ was associated with dementia onset suggests that it is not the objective situation, but, rather, the perceived absence of social attachments that increases the risk of cognitive decline,” the researchers wrote.
