Scientists fight superbugs naturally with copper

(NaturalNews) Contact with copper can prevent bacteria from exchanging genetic material and even kill them, making it a potent resource in the fight against the spread of drug-resistant superbugs, according to a study conducted at the University of Southampton, England and published in the journal mBio.

Bacteria possess an ability known as horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which allows entirely unrelated species to exchange genetic material with each other. Researchers say this ability is responsible for much of the spread of antibiotic-resistant disease in recent decades.

The researchers sought to determine whether HGT can take place outside the human body, on settings such as door knobs, counter tops or hospital trays. Because many frequently-touched surfaces in healthcare settings are made of stainless steel, the researchers tested the survival of multi-drug resistant strains of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae on stainless steel, copper and copper alloy surfaces.

“Whilst studies have focused on HGT in vivo [in the body], this work investigates whether the ability of pathogens to persist in the environment, particularly on touch surfaces, may also play an important role,” lead author Bill Keevil said.

The researchers found that while both species of drug-resistant bacteria were able to survive on stainless steel surfaces for several weeks, they quickly died when placed on copper or copper alloy surfaces. In addition, bacteria on the copper and copper alloy surfaces suffered destruction of their DNA – presumably making both reproduction and HGT impossible.

“Break the chain of contamination”

The findings support the conclusion that surfaces people touch play an important role in disease transmission, the researchers said.

“We know many human pathogens survive for long periods in the hospital environment and can lead to infection, expensive treatment, blocked beds and death,” Keevil said. “What we have shown in this work is the potential for strategically-placed antimicrobial copper touch surfaces to not only break the chain of contamination, but also actively reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance developing at the same time.”

Copper surfaces are not a substitute for hand washing and other hygiene practices, he emphasized.

Keevil noted that copper might play an important epidemiological role outside of healthcare settings, as well.

“Copper touch surfaces have promise for preventing antibiotic resistance transfer in public buildings and mass transportation systems, which lead to local and – in the case of jet travel – rapid worldwide dissemination of multi-drug resistant superbugs as soon as they appear,” he said.

“People with inadequate hand hygiene could exchange their bugs and different antibiotic resistance genes just by touching a stair rail or door handle, ready to be picked up by someone else and passed on. Copper substantially reduces and restricts the spread of these infections.”

Copper and silver have both showed great promise as antibacterial agents, and are already being used in hospitals across the United Kingdom. A 2011 study, for example found that the use of copper surfaces in hospitals killed 97 percent of bacteria and reduced infection rates by 40 percent.

Valerie Frankel: Hot Yoga Kicked My Ass, And that i Liked It

I tried Bikram yoga. Twenty-six poses in 90 minutes in a room heated to 104 degrees. My first three sessions were horrible, okay and great, in that order. After my triumphant third session — I got through every pose, no light-headedness or true misery — I thought, “Hot yoga is my bitch.”

In high cock, I walked into my forth class and smugly set up my towel. I was going to stretch and sweat copiously like a yogi master. Well, I survived the 90 minutes, but barely. It was torture. When class was over, I sat up to leave, and immediately sank back down. My fingers were tingling, and my head swam. I crawled out of the hot room to the front desk area. The normal temperature helped, but my hands and feet were still buzzing. I lay down on a bench, a hair’s width from passing out.

The instructor asked, “What did you have to drink today-”

“Two cups of coffee.”

Relief washed over her face. I wasn’t having a heart attack. I was dehydrated. Apparently, one should drink a liter of coconut water an hour before class, and then drink steadily during. I did take sips of water between poses. But not nearly enough. The instructor gave me Emergen-C, an electrolytes powder, diluted in water. I clung to consciousness while I drank it. Within a few minutes, I felt much better. My heart slowed and the tingling stopped. Legs still shaking, I retrieved my mat, and got out of there.

Later that night, my hip went into spasm. It still hurts 12 hours later. My husband said, “So you almost fainted, and you can barely walk. Yoga is so great for your health!”

I want to go back. As soon as the hip stops aching.

Regardless of the physical toll, this new, challenging, possibly dangerous practice feels necessary and important for my sense of self. Some positive insight: At 47, embarrassment is behind me. I didn’t care about being the oldest, fattest person in the yoga room. I had to stay intensely focused on my breathing, the poses. No one was judging me, including myself. And then, the swoon. Twenty years ago, if I’d almost fainted at a gym, I would have pretended I was fine to avoid making anyone else uncomfortable. Not so now! I said, “Help!” I needed it. I asked for it. No shame, no fear. It’s really okay to be a bother.

Some negative insight, too: Being unprepared or too cocky about yoga, or anything, will kick my ass. The truth is, I’ve been coasting for a while now. Professionally, I’ve stayed within my wheelhouse for years. I’m coasting in my marriage and with my friendships. I’ve relied on comfort and acquired skills, and haven’t pushed or taken risks. Past success, though, does not guarantee smooth sailing ahead. Logically, I know this. But I’d been willfully blinding myself to the uncertainties.

I’m not saying that, after four yoga classes, I’m going to make major changes in my relationships and career. But I am thinking about this stuff and making the connections. My thoughts are stretching, even if my hip joint stubbornly resists.

Four the explanation why the TSA must be abolished immediately, just in time for the vacations

(NaturalNews) As we enter the busiest travel season of the year, it is difficult not to think of the millions of innocent people traveling through U.S. airports that will be forcibly subjected to naked body radiation blasts, full-body groping and molestation, and other unconstitutional abuses by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). And the worst aspect of this government-imposed tyranny is that it is wholly unnecessary in light of the actual facts surrounding terrorism and airport security.

Here are four little-known reasons why the TSA continues to be a completely useless entity, and why the bloated agency needs to be abolished immediately for the sake of protecting life and preserving freedom and liberty:

1) Virtually nobody is at risk of becoming a victim of “terrorism.” When the Bush administration first began beating the war drums following the 9/11 terrorist attacks back in 2001, it seemed as though the entire nation fell victim to the propaganda that terrorists were lurking behind every corner, and within every airport terminal. But the truth of the matter is that terrorism of the type that occurred on 9/11 is so rare that more people accidentally die every year in their bathtubs than the number that die from terrorism.

In fact, a report issued by the TSA back in 2011 reveals that not a single terrorist even tried to board an airplane that entire year. And the supposed terrorists like the so-called “underwear bomber” that were intercepted in years prior actually turned out to be CIA plants. All in all, the actual risk of falling victim to Islamic terrorism is so low that it is virtually inconsequential statistically.

2) Islamic extremism responsible for fewer than 0.003 percent of all U.S. murders. Similarly, fewer than 36 of all the murders that occurred in the U.S. between 9/11 and the end of 2010 could even be remotely linked to Islamic extremism, while the other 149,964 were completely unrelated to terrorism. This further illustrates how utterly miniscule the threat truly is from terrorism in the U.S., and how insanely off-balance and deranged the perpetual obsession with terrorism has become throughout the country.

3) Nearly $90 billion has already been wasted funding the TSA since 9/11. The average American is more likely to get attacked by a zombie or a power-drunk cop with a taser than by a terrorist, to put it another way, and yet the federal government continues to pump billions of taxpayer dollars into the TSA every year so the agency can molest grandmothers, children, and terminally-ill cancer patients. According to the figures, more than $90 billion has been injected to fund TSA operations since the agency’s inception following 9/11, even though there have been more than 25,000 airport security breaches that have taken place since 2001 under the TSA’s watch.

4) More people have died from driving to avoid the TSA than died in the 9/11 attacks. Many people have become so fed up with the TSA’s antics that they are now driving to their destinations rather than flying. But according to the figures, this uptick in vehicle use has led to an increase in about 242 driving fatalities every month. If you multiply this out over 11 years, this translates into nearly 32,000 additional deaths as a result of the TSA’s creation, which is nearly 12 times the number that died on 9/11.

If the TSA had never been created, in other words, fewer lives would have been lost in the years since 9/11, which further proves that this corrupt agency is not only useless, but also a detriment to American security.

Doctors removing healthy breasts unnecessarily

(NaturalNews) You’ve probably heard the news about several celebrities who’ve gone public with their decision to have their non-cancerous breasts removed and replaced with breast implants so they never have to worry about breast cancer. This must be because there is a strong likelihood these women will suffer from breast cancer if they don’t have mastectomies, right- Wrong.

At least, that’s the news from University of Michigan (U-M) Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers. Their just released study makes a strong argument that a startling number of these breast removal surgeries, performed to supposedly prevent breast cancer, shouldn’t be done at all.

In fact, the researchers found about 70 percent of women who have both breasts removed (technically called prophylactic mastectomy) following a breast cancer diagnosis in only one breast do so despite an extremely low risk of cancer developing in their healthy breasts. The study, which will be presented November 30th at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Care Symposium, points out that a diagnosis of breast cancer in one breast does not increase the likelihood of breast cancer recurring in the other breast for the vast majority of women.

However, the research team found that 90 percent of women who had surgery to remove both breasts claimed they were doing so because they were worried about a recurrence. “Women appear to be using worry over cancer recurrence to choose contralateral prophylactic mastectomy. This does not make sense, because having a non-affected breast removed will not reduce the risk of recurrence in the affected breast,” researcher Sarah Hawley, Ph.D., associate professor of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School, said in a media statement. “But this procedure is still done and it’s done in women who don’t need to have it done.”

The new study points out that recent data has shown more and more women are having this super aggressive surgery which clearly amounts to over treatment. The researchers also note that this is not simply a cosmetic surgery procedure. A double mastectomy is a major operation that is associated with more complications and often a difficult recovery.

It is true that some women with a family history of two or more immediate family members (mother, sister, daughter) who have had breast or ovarian cancer and/or who test positive for mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes may be advised to consider having both breasts removed because they are at high risk of a new cancer developing in both breasts. But these women are the exception.

“For women who do not have a strong family history or a genetic finding, we would argue it’s probably not appropriate to get the unaffected breast removed,” Hawley, who is also a research investigator at the Ann Arbor VA Center of Excellence in Clinical Care Management Research and a member of the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, emphasized.

Homeland Security plots the right way to spy on Americans through social media surveillance

(NaturalNews) The Constitution’s once-solid privacy protections are about to take another hit under a new Department of Homeland Security initiative to spy on Americans via social media networks – all in the name of keeping us safe, of course.

Under the ruse of collecting and analyzing “health-related data,” DHS is testing whether scanning sites like Facebook, Twitter and others “could help identify infectious disease outbreaks, bioterrorism or other public health and national security risks,” GovInfo Security reported.

The department has spent $3 million in taxpayer money on a one-year contract with Accenture Federal Services, the firm that is actually providing the online spyware. Calling it a “biosurveillance” pilot project, the department says it will involve automatically monitoring social media sites to collect and analyze “health-related data” in real time, according to John Matchette, the managing director for Accenture’s public safety division (no word on Matchette’s thoughts regarding the constitutionality of the program his firm will help facilitate).

According to the report, the software will be designed to collect health-related keywords and other information, to include medical symptoms, that show up in online postings. Machette says the data mined will be collected and analyzed in aggregate.

“The information won’t be tracked back to the individuals who posted it,” he claimed, mindful of the constitutional issues surrounding such an operation.

Privacy advocates aren’t buying it, however.

“Even when data is in aggregate, we don’t have any clear policies around how data will be used and how it can be traced back, including if and when there are signs of an illness outbreak,” Deven McGraw, director of the health privacy project at the Center for Democracy & Technology. “I think it’s a legitimate question to ask [DHS] what the guidelines are for using this data. I’d prefer they have a plan in advance for dealing with this, rather than waiting.”

As usual, no one from DHS or Accenture responded to requests by GovInfo for comment on McGraw’s concerns.

Machette said the software will be programmed to “watch for trends,” such as whether new or unusual clusters of symptoms in certain geographic regions are reported on social networking sites.

Biosurveillance efforts are expanding

The analysis of social media data is evolving and expanding, he added, noting that both recent presidential campaigns heavily data mined social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to look for trends.

Plans are to expand the surveillance effort far beyond the parameters of this initial test, officials said.

Accenture’s program will focus on analysis of social media data, but “the biosurveillance effort has underlying capabilities that could be expanded to integrate data from other sources, such as hospital emergency departments, drug distribution companies and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” the report said.

“This is big data analytics,” Machette told the website.

Building on prior programs

The current project is not the first biosurveillance project undertaken by DHS. The department is already analyzing data that is collected by the Atlanta-based CDC from public health departments nationwide.

Also, DHS paid a federal contractor in 2009 to monitor social media sites, to see how residents of Standish, Mich., were responding to a government proposal to move high-value terrorist prisoners there from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, The New York Times reported.

While it has long been known that the department monitors the Internet for information about emerging threats to public safety like a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, the documents show that its Social Networking/Media Capability program, at least in an early stage, was also focused on “public reaction to major governmental proposals with homeland security implications.”

Another report from ABC News reveals the desperation and panic now forming among residents in Staten Island.

The situation is so bad that even the Red Cross is being blamed for not showing up with supplies:

“This is America, not a third world nation. We need food, we need clothing,” Staten Island Borough President Jim Molinaro said today. “My advice to the people of Staten Island is: Don’t donate to the American Red Cross. Put their money elsewhere.” (ABC News)

NBC News reports:

Staten Island officials had some choice words Thursday to describe what they said was a feeble disaster-relief response to people left dying, homeless and hungry in the New York City borough hit particularly hard by Sandy. Staten Island’s top elected official blasted the American Red Cross response as “an absolute disgrace” and went so far as to urge its residents not to donate to the largely volunteer agency.

This situation, by the way, is only going to get FAR WORSE before it gets better. CNBC reports gas shortages will continue for at least a week, possibly longer. That’s seven more days even while desperation has already taken hold on day three!

And power- Con Edison says it will be another 10 days before power is restored to the majority of customers currently in the dark.

As long as the power is out, gas stations can’t pump gas, and that means continued gas shortages. That, in turn, means more desperation, starvation and even panic as residents can’t use vehicles to acquire food and supplies. The American way of life, remember, is almost unimaginable without gasoline. Half the population seems physically incapable of walking anywhere these days, and almost nobody own bicycles anymore.

What happens when millions of people packed into high-density cities can’t get food, fuel or electricity-

People get desperate, of course. Desperation is about to set in. In the days ahead, you’re going to see more fights and even weapons brought to bear in real-life survival scenarios.     People devising looting sprees via Twitter in wake of Hurricane Sandy may find armed resistance awaiting them

    (NaturalNews) Scores of people are using the social networking site Twitter to plan looting sprees in the wake Hurricane Sandy, though many of them – if they decide to follow through on their threat – could wind up facing the business end of a firearm.

    In fact, the New York National Guard is already preparing for any eventuality, including civil disobedience and looting, according to reports that say the state is planning on deploying nearly 1,200 soldiers for those, and other, purposes.

    NY Guardsman will “provide command and control and logistical support” in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier, and will also be on hand to “protect against looting.”

    In fact, tens of thousands of National Guardsmen are being alerted to respond to emergencies and other duties related to Hurricane Sandy. As of Monday, according to one official source, as many as 60,000 have already been notified in states all along Sandy’s path along the Eastern seaboard.

    Whether the looting will take place individually or in gangs remains to be seen, but given the fairly recent phenomenon of using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to plan and execute “flash mobs,” it’s something authorities are taking seriously.

    According to one report by Fox News, teen flash mobs are on the rise. Worse, they have transformed from “the mostly benign and goofy” kind “in which groups suddenly break into dance at a mall or stumble around like zombies at train stations” into “bold robberies” and other criminal activity.

    “Police say the suspects select a time and place and enter the store in droves taking what they want and leaving before security or police can catch them,” the report said.

    “Over 90 percent of crimes committed by young people are done so in a group,” Scott Decker, a professor of criminology at Arizona State University, told the news service.

    Of 129 retailers that were surveyed by the National Retail Federation recently, almost 95 percent of them reported being victimized by organized criminals over the past year, with 85 percent saying the problem had only grown in the past three years.

    Now, the social sites are being used to plan looting sprees in the wake of what many forecasters and meteorologists are saying could be a storm of “historic” proportions, especially in terms of the damage Sandy may leave behind.

    Those who are seriously planning to loot – an unbelievably callous thing to do at a time when a community and its residents are at their most vulnerable – may stop to consider what police in New Orleans were instructed to do in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction in 2005.

    According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the local newspaper:

    In the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina, an order circulated among New Orleans police authorizing officers to shoot looters, according to present and former members of the New Orleans Police Department.

    The paper went on to quote some current officers as saying they were explicitly instructed by higher ups to do whatever was necessary to “take back the city,” which included not-so-veiled instructions to “shoot looters.”

    One man – Henry Glover – was actually shot and killed by police while looting during Katrina.

    From the NOLA paper:

    In one instance captured on a grainy videotape shot by a member of the force, a police captain relayed the instructions at morning roll call to cops preparing for the day’s patrols.

    “We have authority by martial law to shoot looters,” Capt. James Scott told a few dozen officers in a portion of the tape viewed by reporters. Scott, then the commander of the 1st District, is now captain of the special operations division.

    Following Sandy; however, looters may have more to worry about from residents and business owners keen on keeping their stuff. And National Guardsman assigned to help them do so.

    “One hopes that we can look at what happened in New Orleans and learn from it, rather than just repeating the same mistakes all over again the next time disaster hits,” writes Doug Mataconis at the Outside The Beltway blog.

    TSA pulls naked body scanners out of key airports; still refuses to undergo third-party safety testing

    (NaturalNews) After months of complaints, negative feedback, bad press and no small amount of controversy, the Transportation Security Administration has announced it will begin removing its naked body scanners out of key airports around the country.

    Janet Napolitano, head of the Department of Homeland Security – which oversees the TSA – made the decision in recent days to pull the scanners from New York City’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports.

    The question is why. Why did it take so long- And what’s the reason for the move- Understand that the machines are not being retired (at great taxpayer expense); they have simply been moved to other, less busy, airports where, presumably “far fewer passengers will be exposed to radiation,” reported the non-profit investigative media organization ProPublica, which added that the dangerous machines were already removed from Boston’s busy Logan International Airport earlier this month.

    The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that the backscatter machines are going away from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport as well.

    Oh, they’re not dangerous – Move is ‘strategic’

    The TSA’s “official” excuse is that the machines were causing unacceptable delays at the two NYC airports and that removing them is an effort to speed up the lines.

    Since when has the TSA given two hoots about customer service- This is the agency that allows its staff to grope kids, grandmothers and busty women, while allowing the criminals it hires to rob passengers blind before heading home to download child pornography.

    No, some other reason that the agency feels is threatening – or potentially threatening – has forced this decision. Could it be that critics like us have been right all along – that the revealing backscatter x-ray machines actually do cause harm-

    The agency says no, that’s not the reason. But when was the last time a federal agency admitted a mistake-

    “They’re not all being replaced,” TSA spokesman David Castelveter told ProPublica. “It’s being done strategically. We are replacing some of the older equipment and taking them to smaller airports. That will be done over a period of time.”

    “Older equipment-” The backscatter machines, which only came online beginning in 2009, are supposed to be state-of-the-art.

    “Strategically-” Wouldn’t you like to know what this term is supposed to mean- Like, what’s the strategy

    This sounds an awful lot like the TSA’s way of reducing a known health threat while allowing itself an “out” by saying, in essence, “Hey, we never said they were dangerous…in fact, we’re still using them.”

    Why do they have to be backscatter machines-

    Granted, the agency does still utilize them in 25 of the nation’s busiest airports (though the agency won’t confirm which ones, according to ProPublica).

    And, in late September, the TSA awarded three U.S. companies contracts that could potentially be worth as much as $245 million to develop the next generation of scanners; one design by American Science & Engineering uses backscatter technology.

    But there are other, safer machines out there that are more than capable of screening passengers. One type utilizes millimeter-wave scanning technology, which emits less radiation and is far less invasive while still incredibly effective at finding objects on passengers.

    Some scientists can’t figure out why the TSA won’t use this viable alternative.

    “Why would we want to put ourselves in this uncertain situation where potentially we’re going to have some cancer cases-” David Brenner, director of Columbia University’s Center for Radiological Research, told ProPublica last year. “It makes me think, really, why we don’t use millimeter waves when we don’t have so much uncertainty.”

    More hospitals promote breastfeeding by forgoing unhealthy formula samples

    (NaturalNews) A recent NY Times (NYT) article covered the trend of more and more hospitals no longer giving out free samples of infant formulas to birthing mothers provided by the manufacturers.

    The article cited expert consensus for the benefits of breast feeding and the infant formula manufacturers’ understanding that breast feeding is “the gold standard.” But it also focused considerably on the mothers who protest the ban.

    Considerable commentary both in the article and in the comments displayed the pro and con sides of this issue. The con-side declared some mothers cannot breast feed, and formula is expensive. They weren’t reminded how inexpensive breast feeding is.

    But the pro side points out that when a hospital provides free samples of infant formula, it makes it appear that there is no difference in how someone feeds an infant. And it also makes it seem there is no support for overcoming actual breast feeding difficulties.

    Granting longer periods of paid maternity leave would be helpful. The US.. ranks lowest among industrialized nations for paid maternity leaves, which emphasize the mother’s recovery more than giving her space and time to breast feed for at least six months.

    One weakness displayed both in the NYT article and its comments was the lack of nutritional awareness. Soy-based infant formulas were often referred to as a good solution. But the fact is that soy, even non-GMO soy, has problems. And most soy is GM.

    The only soy that’s beneficial is fermented, organic soy, such as that which comprises natto, tempeh, misso, and some soy sauces. Soy as a health food is a con. Even non-GMO soy, which is very rare, has several anti-nutrients that block or impede the body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

    Soy products dampen thyroid activity, promote excessive blood clotting, contain phytoestrogens that create hormone imbalances, and carry toxic levels of aluminum and manganese. Soy crops, especially GMOs, are very heavily sprayed with toxic chemicals. Even non-soy milk infant formulas contain some soy products.

    Infant formulas contain massive amounts of sugar that may be GMO (beet sugar) and even worse, GMO corn syrup compounds or HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Unlike sugar, corn syrup or HFCS is not fully metabolized into energy. Almost half of it is stored in the liver as fat.

    Eugenics in education: Healthy boy banned from public school because of genetic makeup

    (NaturalNews) An 11-year-old California schoolboy named Colman Chadam has been banished from his school and forced to transfer to another school because he carries the genetic mutation for cystic fibrosis. The boy shows no symptoms of the disease and appears to be in perfect health. He is being banished from his own school solely due to the genetic code he carries.

    This is being reported by Fox News, Daily Mail and other news outlets.

    What we’re seeing here is the beginning of the application of eugenics in public schools. This is how it starts: Banning little boys and girls because of a “bad” gene sequence, even if they have absolutely no symptoms and are living in a state of perfect health. Next it progresses to racial genetic profiling, with declarations that people of certain races are “genetically inferior” and therefore unable to be taught in public schools, we’ll be told. And from there, as history has shown, it moves into a eugenics phase where mad scientists backed by government power pursue forced sterilizations of those who don’t have the “correct” genetic profile.

    From there, it is of course a small step to firing up the gas chambers and just doing away with anyone who doesn’t have the right genes. As HBO host Bill Maher recently said, “I’m consistently pro-death. …My motto is let’s kill the right people.”

    The really startling thing about this decision to banish a young boy from school is that his non-symptomatic health condition is not even contagious! He is being banned on the presupposition that he might someday become symptomatic and harbor bacteria in his lungs which could be passed on to other schoolchildren.

    But wait a minute: Since when did we ban schoolchildren for the possibility of harboring bacteria- Have you ever seen a young child in school who wasn’t harboring bacteria- If this is the new standard, then every snot-nosed kid would need to be banned from schools, too, because they’re harboring all kinds of bacteria. Every kid who coughs in class should be banned, too, because their respiratory tract might be harboring bacteria.

    But of course this never happens. Colman Chadam is being banned from school not because it makes any medical sense, but because the school is attempting to set a precedent for eugenics-based denial of education to young children. Colman is easy to target because he’s white, but the real goal of these eugenicists is to eliminate blacks and minorities. Once they set the precedent with white kids, they can simply expand the program to go after those they really want to target.

    In the case of Colman Chadam, his mother made the silly mistake of disclosing his genetic condition to school officials. She must have been one of those naive government worshippers who thought school authorities would honor her privacy and make decisions based on rational thinking. Instead, her son got discriminated against because of his genetic makeup. This is, by definition, medical racism.

    Schools claim they do not judge children by the color of their skin, but they do judge children by other genetic markers, as you’re seeing here. That’s the very definition of racism, and there’s no limit to how far they can take this. The argument will now be that your child is “genetically predisposed” to something like cancer, or tuberculosis, or violent behavior. Any genetic “defect” can be used to deny your child an education.

    My advice- Don’t tell school officials anything they don’t need to know. And for certain don’t take your child to a pediatrician, because they will call the police on you and have you arrested if you refuse to injected your child with mercury-laced vaccines.

    Nonprofit organizations exposed: American Dietetic Association and others in bed with Monsanto

    (NaturalNews) There is a reason why the American Dietetic Association (ADA), which was recently renamed the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), often makes ridiculous nutrition recommendations such as to eat lots of grains as part of a “healthy” diet, or to avoid eating fats, particularly saturated fats, which it falsely suggests are harmful to health. It turns out that this nonprofit organization and many others routinely accept cash contributions and sponsorships from major industry players like Monsanto, Procter & Gamble, and the National Dairy Council, which steer the types of information they disseminate publicly.

    According to information compiled by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a food safety and nutrition advocacy group, the ADA, for years, has been accepting cash donations from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and processed food industries in exchange for allowing these industries to basically publish its materials, and craft its nutrition advice. Back in 1996, for instance, ADA accepted large cash contributions from Kellogg’s, Kraft Foods, Nestle USA, Coca-Cola, General Mills, Monsanto, Nabisco, Procter & Gamble, and others, all of which were given access to the development of a number of official ADA “fact sheets.”

    These fact sheets, of course, were distributed to the public as trusted nutrition guides, and contained all sorts of flawed information about “healthy eating” such as recommendations to eat more canola, corn, and soybean oils, and to avoid saturated fats like coconut oil and butter. These same ADA fact sheets have been instrumental over the years in making people view “fats” in general as unhealthy, which has led to much confusion about the importance of eating healthy fats, as well as a massive upswing in chronic disease rates all across the board.

    In 1999, the ADA actually partnered with the ConAgra Foundation, which pushes all sorts of unhealthy, processed foods on the public that contain genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), harmful additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG), refined sugars and flours, and other toxins, to put out a pamphlet entitled, “Home Food Safety: It’s in Your Hands.” This guide specifically directs people away from drinking whole, raw milk, for instance, because of its supposed “dangers,” and instead encourages people to basically eat all their foods heavily cooked.     That same year, it was announced that ADA had partnered with the pharmaceutical industry and Monsanto to “educate” the public on the “appropriate” use of dietary supplements. As can be expected, this unbelievable conflict of interest led ADA to generally discourage the use of supplements by ordinary folks. ADA’s position today suggests that most people do not need dietary supplements, and that those who do take them without any obvious health problems are attempting to shortcut their way to nutrition by not having to eat fruits and vegetables.

    As we have pointed out numerous times before here at Natural News, dietary supplements can be highly beneficial for many seemingly-healthy people because the modern food supply, which is largely grown industrially in nutrient-deficient soils, lacks basic nutritional elements. On top of this, the government’s recommended daily allowances (RDA) for various vitamins and minerals are far too low to maintain optimal health anyway — and ADA, of course, aligns itself with this flawed RDA paradigm.

    Suboptimal vitamin D levels significantly increase heart problems risk

    (NaturalNews) The past decade has seen thousands of studies published that all demonstrate the profound importance of obtaining sufficient amounts of the sunshine vitamin from food, sun exposure and supplementation. Scientists determined that in people with low blood levels of vitamin D, boosting them with supplements more than halved a person’s risk of dying from any cause compared to someone who remained deficient.

    The study set out to investigate the connection between vitamin D levels and the incidence of heart disease and early death in a cohort of more than 10,000 people from Denmark. In addition, the researchers included meta-data from 35 pertinent studies covering a lengthy time span of 29 years. Study author, Dr. James Vacek noted “We expected to see that there was a relationship between heart disease and vitamin D deficiency; we were surprised at how strong it was… it was so much more profound than we expected.”

    In this study, scientists compared those individuals with the lowest levels of vitamin D (fewer than 15 nanomol per liter, accounting for five percent of the population analyzed) to those considered in the normal range (more than 50 nanomol per liter, or approximately 50 percent of the cohort). The researchers noted that declining levels of vitamin D were directly associated with increased risk of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction and early death.

    The authors found that those with the lowest levels of vitamin D experienced a 64 percent higher risk of heart attack, 57 percent higher risk of early death, 40 percent higher risk of ischemic heart disease and at least an 81 percent higher risk of death from heart disease. The researchers concluded “We can ascertain that there is a strong statistical correlation between a low level of vitamin D and high risk of heart disease and early death. The explanation may be that a low level of vitamin D directly leads to heart disease and death.”

    In addition to the cardiovascular findings, the team determined that people with deficient levels of vitamin D were more than twice as likely to have diabetes, 40 percent more likely to have high blood pressure and about 30 percent more likely to suffer from cardiomyopathy (heart muscle weakening). The bottom line is simple: supplement with an oil-based form of vitamin D3 (most adults require 5,000 to 7,000 IU per day, depending on weight and individual metabolism) to reach ideal blood levels of 50 to 70 ng/mL (as measured by a 25(OH)D blood test) to thwart heart disease and chronic illnesses leading to an early death.

    A 2.47 mg/L concentration of fluoride, which is considered “high,” is hardly “ten times what we see here in the U.S.,” an erroneous claim made by pro-fluoride fanatic Larry Hund, a Wichita-based pediatrician and leader of Wichitans for Healthy Teeth, the primary group in Wichita pushing for water fluoridation. Some U.S. cities, in fact, have fluoride levels that exceed the 2.47 mg/L level of fluoride evaluated in the Harvard study, which means it most definitely has relevance in the current debate over whether or not to fluoridate.     Even if you buy into the claim that the roughly 0.7 mg/L of fluoride that Wichita plans to add to its water supply is less than what was used in the Harvard fluoride study, there is still no solid evidence proving that even this lower level is safe. Since fluoride tends to accumulate in glands and tissue over time, any level of repeated exposure appears to be dangerous, not to mention the fact that the jury is still out about whether or not ingesting fluoride provides any legitimate oral health benefits whatsoever.

    “The key takeaway for me in the (Harvard) study is, one, they didn’t rule out the danger (of fluoride), and two, they said further research is necessary,” said Don Landis, a spokesman for the group Wichitans Opposed to Fluoridation. “That’s what we’re saying; the science is not settled. Prior research bodies have implicated increased use of fructose, and its super-charged twin, high fructose corn syrup with weight gain and NAFLD. Fructose consumption in the U.S. has more than doubled in the past 30 years and is found in fruits and vegetables, whereas HFCS is a mixture of glucose and fructose that is used as a sweetener in many processed consumer food products including bread, cereal, and soda.

    Researchers publishing in the journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, Hepatology, found that obese patients with type 2 diabetes who consume higher amounts of fructose, display reduced levels of liver adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a compound involved in energy transfer between cells. The scientists determined that elevated uric acid levels are associated with more severe hepatic ATP depletion as fructose consumption is increased.

    To conduct the study, researchers evaluated 244 obese and diabetic adults from the Look AHEAD Study, with dietary fructose consumption estimated by a food frequency questionnaire. The scientists assessed changes in liver ATP content using an IV-delivered fructose challenge, and then compared patients with low fructose consumption (fewer than 15 grams per day) to those with high fructose consumption (greater than 15 grams per day).

    The researchers determined that participants with the highest intake of dietary fructose had lower liver ATP levels and a greater change in ATP content following the fructose challenge as compared to those who consumed a lower amount of fructose. Patients with high uric acid levels displayed lower ATP stores in response to fructose. This means that fructose consumption is directly correlated to metabolic liver function and is a significant determinant in how well the liver performs its more than 300 critical functions necessary to sustain life.

    The study team concluded “High fructose consumption and elevated levels of uric acid are associated with more severe depletion of liver ATP. Our findings suggest that increased dietary fructose intake may impair liver ‘energy balance.’” This study reinforces the wealth of scientifically validated research to avoid excess fructose consumption from sweetened beverages and processed foods to avoid weight gain and risk of NAFLD and liver failure.
